Reno, NV – July 28, 2025 — A deadly shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) early Monday morning left two people dead and four others hospitalized, including the suspected gunman, who was shot by police outside the popular casino-hotel. Authorities are continuing to investigate what they describe as a tragic and senseless act of violence.

Timeline of the Incident

The Reno Police Department reported receiving an emergency call regarding an active shooter at approximately 7:25 a.m. Officers arrived on the scene within four minutes. The confrontation with the suspect occurred shortly after, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was shot by responding officers and transported to a local hospital. His condition remains unknown. Police confirmed that several other individuals were injured during the incident, with four victims taken to area hospitals. Their conditions are also currently unconfirmed.

A Swift and Coordinated Response

Authorities praised the rapid response from law enforcement and Grand Sierra Resort’s on-site security personnel, crediting their immediate actions with potentially preventing further casualties.

“We are incredibly grateful for the swift and courageous response by our armed security team,” the GSR said in a public statement. “Their immediate actions helped prevent further harm. We also want to thank the Reno Police Department for their rapid assistance and coordination, which was instrumental in quickly eliminating the threat and protecting lives.”

The Sparks Police Department is leading the investigation into both the active shooter incident and the officer-involved shooting, with support from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and Reno Police Department.

Scene Remains Active, Public Advised to Avoid Area

As of late Monday morning, the GSR remained an active investigation site. Authorities asked the public to avoid the west side parking lot, where much of the initial violence is believed to have occurred. GSR employees and guests were advised to use the Greg Street entrance instead.

The Reno Police Department confirmed that medical aid was provided at the scene by first responders, hotel staff, and law enforcement before victims were transported for further treatment.

GSR Condemns Violence, Offers Support to Victims

In a statement to the Reno Gazette Journal, Grand Sierra Resort management expressed sorrow and solidarity with the victims and their families:

“We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that occurred in our parking area earlier today. Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident.”

The resort affirmed it is fully cooperating with investigators and remains operational. Support is being offered to both staff and guests impacted by the shooting.

Reno Leaders React: “A Heartbreaking Day”

Reno city officials have called the shooting a tragedy that shocked the local community.

“This is a heartbreaking day for Reno,” said Council Member Devon Reese, confirming the deaths and injuries earlier in the morning. He noted that additional non-critical injuries were also reported but did not elaborate.

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve acknowledged the situation remained fluid and urged patience as authorities piece together what happened.

“We are trying to understand how it started and who was involved,” she said. “We don’t have all the details yet, but it could have been much worse. GSR has one of the strongest security teams in the city.”

Mayor Schieve also confirmed that she had been in contact with both local law enforcement and the Governor’s office, adding, “All the agencies—Sparks, the Sheriff’s Office, Reno PD—are working together. That’s what’s special about this community. We show up for each other.”
