PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A heat advisory has been issued for Rhode Island and other parts of Southern New England, with the National Weather Service warning residents to brace for dangerous heat and humidity levels through midweek.
The advisory is in effect from Monday, July 28, through Wednesday, July 30, as high temperatures combined with oppressive humidity are expected to create hazardous conditions across the region.
Scorching Temperatures and Extreme Heat Index
According to the National Weather Service, daytime highs in the Providence area are forecast to hit 91°F on Monday, peak at 96°F on Tuesday, and slightly drop to 94°F on Wednesday. However, the real danger lies in the heat index values, which take into account both temperature and humidity:
- Monday: Heat index between 95–100°F
- Tuesday: Heat index peaking around 103°F
- Wednesday: Heat index back in the 95–100°F range
“These levels of heat and humidity can cause serious health issues, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with preexisting health conditions,” the advisory warns.
Safety Precautions Urged
Authorities are urging residents to take proactive measures to stay safe:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and seek shade or air conditioning.
- Check on elderly neighbors and family members, especially those living alone.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, even for short periods.
“Take extra precautions when outside,” the advisory states. “Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take immediate action if symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke appear.”
Relief in Sight by End of Week
There may be some relief on the horizon. The weather service notes that a cold front could arrive Wednesday evening into Thursday, potentially bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms. This system is expected to usher in cooler and less humid conditions heading into the weekend.
