Maltese Actors Take Spotlight in UK Crime Series Karen Pirie
Karen Pirie Season 2 Brings British Crime Drama to Malta, Showcasing Local Talent and Iconic Locations
The gripping British crime drama Karen Pirie returns with its highly anticipated second season—and this time, Malta takes center stage.
Premiering today on ITV, Season 2 of Karen Pirie spans two timelines and follows DS Karen Pirie (played by Lauren Lyle) as she reopens a chilling cold case from the 1980s involving the abduction of a woman and her young child. Based on the best-selling novels by Val McDermid, the crime thriller continues to captivate audiences with its mix of psychological depth, layered storytelling, and social commentary.
What makes this season especially exciting is its Maltese connection. Several key scenes in the three-episode arc were filmed across scenic locations in Malta, including Valletta, Cottonera, and Mellieħa. The sun-soaked Mediterranean setting offers a sharp visual contrast to the moody Scottish backdrops of previous episodes, adding a compelling layer to the drama’s visual storytelling.
Crucially, the production also spotlights Maltese talent. Local actors Sarah Naudi and Edward De Gaetano appear in significant roles as a Maltese detective and police officer, respectively. Naudi, who moved to London at 15 to pursue an acting career, described the experience as both nostalgic and empowering.
“It was great coming back to places I’d known in a different life,” she told Times of Malta. “The mix of Maltese and foreign crew was lovely—everyone worked together really well. The Maltese crew was so experienced and professional.”
Naudi shared that most of her scenes were opposite series lead Lauren Lyle, praising the Scottish actress for her calm, grounded energy on set.
“Lauren’s so bubbly and kind, but totally professional. I learned so much just by watching her work.”
The role marked a career milestone for Naudi, who often gets cast in roles with ambiguous European backgrounds.
“This was the first time I played a Maltese character. Usually I’m cast as French, Italian, or South American—more recently British. Maltese actors abroad often face typecasting due to their look or accent.”
Offering advice to aspiring Maltese actors hoping to break into the international scene, Naudi emphasized accessibility over elitism.
“Drama school can be expensive, but it shouldn’t stop you. Online platforms like MasterClass have amazing resources. And if you can land a scholarship, go for it!”
With Karen Pirie Season 2 now streaming, Malta’s rich culture, cinematic landscapes, and acting talent are receiving international recognition—cementing the island’s growing appeal as a filming destination for global productions.
