Bubba Wallace Makes History With Brickyard 400 Win at Indianapolis, Snapping 100-Race Drought

Indianapolis, IN – In a groundbreaking moment for NASCAR and motorsports history, Bubba Wallace became the first Black driver to win a major race on the iconic 2.5-mile oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, clinching an emotional and dramatic victory in the 2025 Brickyard 400 on Sunday.

Wallace’s landmark win — his third career NASCAR Cup Series victory — wasn’t just about checking off another box. It was his first win in a crown jewel race, one of NASCAR’s “Big Four,” and it guaranteed him a spot in the 2025 playoffs, ending a 100-race winless streak dating back to Kansas in 2022.

Unbelievable!” Wallace shouted over his radio as he crossed the iconic yard of bricks.

A Race for the Ages: Fuel Worries, Rain Delays, and Overtime Chaos

The race was nothing short of dramatic. After a long green-flag stretch, weather delays, two overtimes, and a late surge from defending winner Kyle Larson kept fans on edge.

Larson had cut Wallace’s five-second lead down to just under three seconds with six laps to go when rain brought out the caution flag. Cars were parked on pit road with four laps remaining, and Wallace had 20 agonizing minutes to game-plan for the restart — all while his team nervously eyed the fuel gauge.

Once the race resumed, Wallace held off Larson through Turn 2 before a wreck brought out another caution, forcing a second overtime. Staying out on potentially low fuel, Wallace rolled the dice — and won big. He once again beat Larson off the line, denying him a chance to become just the fourth driver to win back-to-back Brickyard 400s.

Redemption After Qualifying Frustration

The win came just 24 hours after Wallace was bumped from the provisional pole in the final moments of qualifying by Chase Briscoe. On race day, however, Wallace left no doubt, delivering a triumphant performance that energized his fans and his team, 23XI Racing, co-owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan and fellow NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin.

With 23XI Racing currently embroiled in a legal dispute with NASCAR over charter rights, the victory serves as a timely morale boost and adds another layer of intensity to the team’s season narrative.

In-Season Challenge Drama: Ty Gibbs Cashes In

Beyond the championship implications, Sunday’s race also decided the final of the inaugural NASCAR In-Season Challenge, a single-elimination, March Madness-style tournament. Ty Gibbs claimed the $1 million prize, finishing ahead of surprise finalist Ty Dillon, who had entered the bracket as the 32nd and final seed.

Gibbs, who qualified and raced better than Dillon, crossed the line 21st overall, while Dillon came in 28th — a Cinderella run that fell just short.

Other Notables from the Brickyard

  • Joey Logano, a three-time Cup Series champ, looked poised to challenge for the win before a right rear tire failure and subsequent power loss dashed his hopes with 26 laps to go.
  • Ryan Blaney captured the second stage, his fifth stage win this season, fending off Larson and Hamlin in the process.
  • Chase Briscoe, Saturday’s pole-sitter, took Stage 1 ahead of Wallace and William Byron. It was Briscoe’s second stage victory of 2025.
